This is all sort of funny in a way. We now have a home defense cabinet post. So much for "smaller government" rhetoric from the right. I wonder what the budget will be and of course there will have to be a bureaucracy built around it. Where will that money come from? What are the FBI and CIA for anyway? There are 20+ federal organizations that are supposed to defend us. Where the hell were/are they?????
This tax cut thing is BS. People getting $200 to $800 are not going to go crazy buying. I would love to see the computer scenario for how this would work out. There are soooooo many variables. Chaos theory and fuzzy (math) logic is pervasive. http://www.brillig.com/debt_clock/ In another 4 years, when we (the populace) have all forgotten about this, there will be a tax hike to recover. And of course, it will probably be the democrats in office who have to take the beating for it. Paraphrased "..read my lips, no more new taxes". First Reagan and then Bush. The money has to come from somewhere, doesn't it? Oh yeah, cut capital gains taxes, that will encourage investment and stimulate the economy. That too is BS. People are not investing because of capital gains, they are not investing because the tech market was so hyped by investors and the analysts and then it never panned out - it tanked. The average American does not loose huge amounts on capital gains taxes and in fact don't get that many at all. How many of you have gotten a capital gain? This is businessmen and investors (er, the rich) that want to hang on to as much as possible (not that I blame them). But is does not help the middle class and poor. So who makes up the difference? The middle class. Once again. Our population is quickly shifting toward a majority of older, non-working people. For at least the next 20 years that will be the case. No taxes being generated there, but money will be going out to them. The same with the "death tax" (marketing spin for redistribution of wealth). Very few people leave millions of dollars in non-protect monies to their heirs. Generally, it is put into endowments, trusts, and foundations, with the heirs on the board and paid a salary or stipend. (BTW, I did get a capital gain, fairly large for a middle class person like me, when I sold my stock to an investor a few years ago. I paid it, though my CPA was very creative and I got to keep most of it. If I can get that, you know the big guys aren't having a problem.) My mother-in-laws' mother bitches all the time about welfare, but she never has sent a welfare check back. Not that she contributed much to it, but hey, she deserves it. Funny thing is, I don't mind that I am basically supporting her. Not really. Call it a Christian thing (though I am agnostic, it just makes me feel good to help people). And why do we have any welfare for businesses at all? That is huge money spent. Don't they save for a rainy day? You know, the ant the grasshopper story. 15 billion on the airline bailout. They were nearly laying people off before the WTC. You know those guys are going, "man, this happened just in time. I can keep my 6 million a year salary and get the country to subsidize it." Of course, the salary is frozen. Damn, I bet that hurt. Funniest part is that none of the big, smart CEO's or upper management are getting the sack, just the little people working out there everyday on a hundred or 10 degree ramp or attendants breathing nasty air or clerks listening to people bitch at them because a plane is late. Tens of thousands of them. Was it bad planning on the part of the airline senior management teams not to have a disaster recovery plan in place? Let me guess, they did. It is called the US government. Call it what you will, it is still welfare. Tell me the corporations are not running America. I am just waiting for the oil industry to need a bail out too. We all seem to live in a 2, 4 and 6 year (congressional and presidential terms) world. There is no strategic thinking about our world and future, it is all reactionary. Politicians are afraid to do the right thing, the thing needed 20 or 40 years from now, because right now it may cause the loose of jobs or make fuel more expensive and that would put them out of office. So we leave a mess for our children to clean up, unless they are no better than we are. We can only hope. -Gary > -----Original Message----- > From: Lee [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] > Sent: Wednesday, September 26, 2001 1:28 PM > To: CF-Community > Subject: Greenspan: Tax cut needs to be big > > > http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,35106,00.html > > > About a month ago the democrats where demanding that the existing tax cut > be scaled back because it was economically dangerous.
