the data. What is sent by an NNTP client to get the latest threads and what
format is the return sent in. Same for each thread. Blackstone should allow
for this, it's just the specifics.

That is easy: there is no handshake. The client just starts issueing
commands. For a quick example, just go to the command line and type:
telnet newsbin.cistron.nl 119
You will see that you immediately get a connection and can start retrieving
groups and messages. Just issue some commands (LIST, HELP etc.) and close
the connection with a QUIT.
