My question is: is it an option not to send your kids there?

In most areas your options are "send your kids to the ONE school that your
public school system provides or pay for private school (let's ignore home
schooling just to keep the discussion simple).  Charter schools replace
public schools so is that option still the same or are other concessions
made?

Catholic (and other religious) schools are private schools: parents choose
them (and pay a hefty sum in most cases).  A parent that chooses a private
school also chooses to live with that school's idiosyncrasies.  Private
schools where always alternatives to public schools.  Charter schools
replace public schools, so is there still a choice?  Are you left, possibly,
with ideologically equivalent schools differing only in quality and price as
your only options?

(Let's also face the facts that many people with kids in public schools
really have no choice as it stands: private schools simply cost too much in
many cases.  This works in reverse such that a parent may disagree with a
charter school policy but be unable to afford to place their child in
private school.)

It simply doesn't seem like the parents or children benefit from the
competition - they still get (to my understanding) a grand choice of one
school to pick from unless they can afford private school.

Not to get conspiratorial, but consider the controversy about evolution in
schools.  What's to stop a private enterprise from pushing a religious
agenda  .. already been done and has been in place for years.  The
Catholic
school systems was the out for many kids for many years.  What did they
teach
and what were their controls?

If   you disagree with your charter school policies what recourse do you
have?
   Don't send your kids there.
