I just built out an Athlon64 system for a buddy, and it was so smoking fast I couldn't believe it. Just running WinXP was amazing. Granted, the system had all high-end components, but it was the bomb.

On the 32 v 64 bit thing, since x86-64 is an extension of the x86 architecture, you don't pay a performance penalty for running 32-bit apps, because they are running natively on the system. Intel Itanium 64-it, which is not backwards compatible with x86, requires an emulator to run 32 bit apps and is very slow.

The big difference for native 64-bit apps for AMD will be the ability to address more than 4 GB of RAM. I've been trying to find out details of any other major advantages, but I haven't seen any yet.
