I agree, although I would also argue that the opinions of others are a
not insignificant influence on our relative safety. If foreign
countries hate us, they are much less likely to help us defend
ourselves if not also much less likely to hinder our enemies, often
even if they might have before in spite of having no love for us
(having been only indifferent toward us). How many South Vietnamese
injured or killed US troops after being their country for a number of
years while fighting North Vietnam? While physical attacks, injuries
and deaths as a result of terrorism should be the stick by which our
counter-terrorist efforts are measured, the opinions of other
countries must be given extreme respect.
