I can only speak for one person, a friend of mine who teaches in
Louisiana. From what I have heard from her, there is little to no
respect. She was called a racist when she would punish children of a
certain colour (not her colour, obviously), and I believe she was even
threatened. This was one of the reasons she left public school and went
to a private school.

Locally (SE Virginia), one district refused to gives raises to any of
the teachers, and expressed shock when droves of them left to find jobs
elsewhere. Of course, this is also the same district that still hasn't
air conditioned some of the schools. (And while we may not be _deep_
south, we do get pretty darn hot here.)

I can say that I will teaching my child to respect his teachers and will
not accept anything else.
