both a new MSI NX 6800 Ultra and a new 600 watt Enermax power supply to run
it (my old 430 watt power supply just couldn't do it).
I will almost definitely later regret spending nearly my rent on hardware to
play a $40 game... but for now I'm just happy to be killin' zombies. ;^)
The card itself is a BEAST. It's a two slot card (one for the card, one for
the fan - although why they didn't have the fan exhaust directly out the
backplane I'm not sure) and requires TWO 12v molex inputs for power. Again
I'm not sure why it wants two molex inputs (since I'm running both off the
same wire anyway - couldn't they just split it inside?)
It's working great... DOOM 3 looks absolutely great. I still can't get
"ultra" quality at 1280x1024 (the native res of my LCD) but "high" quality
at that res is smooth as silk.
The dual DVI output is fine although I see more variation between the two
monitors than I did on my Parhelia. Still, it's a very slight variation...
just more than I'm used to.
However the card is really, truly "dual display" in that both heads are
completely capable - both heads have overlay for example (even the Parhelia
doesn't offer that) so my TV card (finally!) works just as well on either
monitor. Also you can, just in software, set either monitor as the
"primary".
Windows looks ever so minutely worse (to me) on the card - slightly
"fuzzier". But it's nothing I'll notice after a day or two.
All told I'm very happy, but I've just started playing with it.
Anybody want a used Parhelia cheap? Or, for that matter, a 430 watt Enermax
power supply? ;^)
