Actually my motherboard is only AGP 4x (I really thought it was 8x) so
that's probably the main reason that I'm not getting my ultra joy.  I'm also
running a dual monitor set up - I've got more research to do but I've read
some things that indicate that running dual monitors (even when one isn't
displaying anything useful like when playing games) draws processing power
away.

I may upgrade the motherboard as well. but I'm not sure.  Doom 3 looks
freakin' awesome as it is. spending even more ridiculous money just to get
AGP 8x will probably just get me in more trouble with the wife.  ;^)  I also
don't know if I could find a motherboard with all the other features I want
that will still use all my old gear.

The shop I bought the card from (which I trust) had tested it on various
supplies and had problems on anything less than a 500.  In my case I'm
running two optical drives, four large hard drives, an overclocked P4, a gig
of RAM, a sound card and a PCI USB/Firewire card in addition to the onboard
USB and firewire ports.  (there are several bus powered USB and Firewire
devices).

The system's pretty loaded.

WTF?!? 6800 Ultra and it won't play 1280x1024 at ultra quality? I'm
seriously envious though.

Re: the PSU, did you try it with the Enermax before upgrading? I'm
honestly surprised the 420W couldn't handle it. IMO, the enthousiast
community tends to go overboard on the "necessity" of a monster PSU.
I'm running a mildly hefty system on a 350W with absolutely no
problems.
