For instance, if you know you won't be watching movies, or playing system intensive games, there's no need to pay extra for a high end video card. If 256 is plenty of memory for what you want to do, dont give into their sales pitches for 512. If 40 gigs is plenty big on the HD, don't pay for 80....etc.
For what you plan to use the machine for, with the rebates and the like, you should be able to get a relatively cheap machine.

Subject: Laptop
Hello,
I'm considering purchasing a new laptop. I've wanted one for awhile now
and Dell is doing a special deal where they will deduct $500 of some of
their laptops that cost over $1500 plus they will give you a rebate. Most
of the systems I have speced out seem to result in a $200 rebate. A $700
break essentially comes out to about a 40% (out of total cost of $1700)
savings over list price. Plus you get $50 in free shipping and no tax.
This would be my first laptop. Is there anything I really need to
know? Basically I just need it to read web pages, manage my finance via
MS Money, player online poker, write some papers, read forums etc. I don't
plan on doing much development work on it - mostly because I don't have any
extra licenses for the stuff I would want to load on the notebook - and I
don't plan on using it to watch movies etc.
My choices are essentially the Inspirion 8600, 700m or 600m. Anyone use
any of these before? Any recommendations on what I need?
