ghost. The screen is filled with dust and has intermittent problems
recognizing strokes, the rocker switch just plain doesn't work any more and
the power button only works about 60% of the time. It's time for a new one.
;^)
I think my heart is set on the new Asus (once the BT+WiFi model is out).
Dual slots, VGA, dual wireless and a built in camera are very attractive.
It's got a slower processor than some, but is three times faster than my
current one. ;^) The new flip cover models look great.. but I think they
may come out much later than the ASUS and I've got the itch bad (if my
current one even lasts that long). I've also got high hopes for the new
Dell model although we've yet to see anything firm on that.
As for the VGA it's a mixed bag. From what I've seen it does make a huge
difference in display quality but not in display size. Instead of making
"640x480" screens they're using it to make "quad-subpixel rendered qvga
screens" - using the extra pixels for anti-aliasing and such not to improve
quality not information quanity.
We're not there yet, but the space issue is getting some attention in that
almost all the companies are finally adding CF slots to their models again.
You can't get 20 gig (yet!) but you can get 5 or 6 gig as a CF hard drive
(and not too expensive if you know which MP3 player to rip apart). Also 1
gig CF cards have hit rock bottom prices - in the $50 range with rebates and
2 gig cards are coming down. SanDisk just announced a 4 gig solid state CF
card. it's still way, way too damn expensive, but it'll come down.
It may happen with this new generation, but I am surprised that nobody's
marketed a 2.5" drive enclosure for pocket PCs (it may be difficult with all
the different form factors) but it seems like a little box that took a small
2.5" drive and onto the back of your PPC could be sold cheaply enough -
although it might double the size of the unit and interfere with extended
batteries.
All told tho' I think this fall/spring is going to see a HUGE revitalization
of the PPC world!
