Gen Shinseki was fired - you can call it "retirement" but it wasn't. This was no different with General Clark and his term as NATO Supreme Commander. As a top leader in any large public organization when you're not getting along with your higher ups, in this case The Pentagon, you are encouraged to "retire." If it's a true retirement there'll be public displays of affection and begging and maybe a roast. There were none in Gen.
