I'm near Chicago and have a sister, brother in law, 2 aunt-in-laws and a grandma-in-law in Chicago or the burbs. I can probably answer some questions. I've never been to New York, and the closest I've been to San Fran is Berkeley. So, I'm not sure I can do major comparisons. But, I can answer some questions about what life is like there (not the job market, though).
Got specific questions? Generals - the commute situation sucks, but probably not as much as D.C. (from what I hear of D.C.). There's a tollway system around the city and it's best avoided during rush hour. There's a jillion restaurants, decent theatre and art and music scene. I'm more familiar with the north side than the south side, but I have a friend who recently bought a house on the south side. It's _very_ neighborhood centric. You can be in a fine neighborhood and cross the street and you're in a "questionable" area. There's lots of gentrification going on. But, there's still lots of cool neighborhoods (Bucktown, East Wicker Park) that are more affordable. The upscale areas (Gold Coast, Boys Town) are pretty expensive, though. Up by where my BIL lives (Irving Park) houses are actually cheaper than they are here in Madison. The El system is pretty good and safe. There's always a bar open somewhere. (The rule is that you have to close for 2 hours in every 24 hour period - so while lots close at 2:00, there's 4:00 and 6:00 a.m. closers, too.) There's lots of sports, obviously. What else?
