I have a condo in downtown Chicago and went to school in San Francisco. Comparing all I'd say:
1.) Downtown Chicago is awesome. Don't expect it to be cheap or to make money on your condo - but it's awesome. You can walk to everything. My place is between Ohio and Grand and there's 2 grocery stores across the street, a 14 screen movie theatre, a McDonalds, a Chipotle, the W hotel's bar, etc. etc. I think it's very European. Jobs in the Chicago area are always plentiful and pay well, but if you live in the Burbs you'll have a long commute in. 2.) San Francisco - I'm not up to date on everything but it's a great city although very expensive. Downtown life isn't as clear cut as Chicago and things are very spread out. You're close to the Ocean though. 3.) New York - awesome city, expensive, but good paying jobs. You can live off the island and commute in fine. I think the island is clostrophobic though and I don't like the people much - no offense to individuals, but just in general they have a bitchy vibe. Of the 3, I'd pick Chicago.
