Well, while I don't the actual reasons from the President, I do have a
theory or two. Now I'm speaking from a pre invasion stand point, assuming we
do actually think he has WMD and is willing to use them.

1, a few things come into play here, first the weather, beginning the move
in during the summer is probably not a good idea. Waiting until after summer
gives the enemy more time to build up defenses and potentially dispose of
WMD and other evidence. At the time the British and the US were working with
Libya to dismantle their weapons programs, a true display of force against
another country would have helped change Libya mind, or make them act
faster.

2, The president or at least the administration proper has claimed that the
choice was made to go to war based on the CIA data, and that the
Administration's choice wasn't a mistake, nor were the votes of the congress
who had access to the same information. The CIA Director did step down, and
there have been more shake ups as of late.

3, We got a major part of our intel from those same foreign allies, they are
not owed an apology, what did the US do to them. They provided us with
information that showed Saddam had weapons. Our CIA used their sources to
corroborate information.

I realize the oil-for-food program was not the major reason, and it may not
have been a real reason. However, they have their own interest to think
about, and I cannot fault them on that. It isn't like we took part in the
European Theatre in WWII because we wanted to be seen as heroes, out
interests were being threatened by the AXIS powers as well.

I don't think the President should say the war is a Mistake, I don't think
it is. I think the administration should have done a better job to begin
with on putting multiple reasons forward.

They did the same thing with Bin Laden, at first they claimed he was the
main target, however that was probably a mistake, sure we want to catch him,
but in reality there is probably more important Terrorist Targets to deal
with than him. The same holds true about Iraq, there are plenty of reasons
to invade Iraq and depose Saddam, they just did a bad job of selling that.

I doubt the sole reason for French policy was oil-for-food; if it were
they would've never gone for 1441. Further why anyone wanted to
invade or not invade Iraq are complicated and won't ever be known by
us.

What we do know is that the President rushed to war for reasons he
hasn't ever explained and he did this with little regard for his
allies or the UN. We've since found out that the threat we were told
about doesn't exist and the President has never said the war was
therefore a mistake. It leaves the following questions:

1.) Why did the President insist that we had to go to war by March?

2.) Why hasn't the President shown any type of accountability for the
lack of WMD or held anyone in his administration or the CIA
accountable?

3.) In rushing to war we burned our allies and the UN; since finding
out we were mistaken, we've not apologized or offered our allies equal
part in the reconstruction. Why not?
