I was having lock up problems myself whenever I would try to use 3rd party contact syncing software with mine. I thought the only way to recover was as you were doing, letting the battery drain down. I don't know why, but if you use the firewire cable and the power brick, my iPod will usually reboot and recover quite nicely now.
