Pro sports act under exemption of anti-monopoly laws.  These are jobs, 
and even though they make a lot of money, judge and abritrators are 
often unwilling to side against the players union because it may weaken 
the position of other unions such as factory workers.

There is lots of re-course.  Even though TO, according to the strict 
terms of his contract, was not a free agent.  The impartial abritrator 
from UPenn was going to side with TO.  This forced the NFL to quicly 
allow the trade before it lost more power.  I personally think TO was 
wrong to do this.
