France returns to the fold and backs elections in Iraq

FOR more than two years Iraq has divided alliances,
sown discord among old friends and split the
international community, but yesterday ministers
representing 20 countries agreed to put aside their
differences over the war and support elections
scheduled to take place in two months time.

...

The French, in particular, appeared to have shifted
their stance. Two days after they agreed to write off
80 per cent of Iraqs multibillion-pound debt, they
were eager to demonstrate that they were not merely
spectators in Iraq but wanted to help to put the
country back together.
