I'm sure that many musicians / artists don't really understand the issues behind file sharing. The singer in my band, for example, wouldn't know the difference between Kazaa, PureVolume, CDBaby, and iTunes.
That said, without knowing the types of artists surveyed, it is hard to say how "universal" these results are. Since the bulk of artists are relatively unknown, file sharing probably doesn't hurt them in the least. I don't think that file sharing has helped or hurt Far Cry Fly either way. On the other hand, I'm sure Metallica is affected differently than Far Cry Fly. I doubt we sold 50 CDs in the past year. I'm sure Metallica sells more than that in a week.
