At what age/grade is this happening? If it is for younger kids (5th grade/10 years old or less, I agree with that simplification. If it is happening in later grades, I disagree, and think that the mechanisms of science should be understood.
As for the large number of scientists that believe in God, it is a clear majority that believe. This is exactly why those who want science removed from our schools because believe it conflicts with their religion, and want to force the teaching of their beliefs is such an unpopular thing in scientific circles. Most of the scientists know better, and want to keep science and religion separate.
