Even with a regular iPod you do not require a third party software.  The
iPod is a hard drive and I regularly just transfer the data over when its
attached as a hard drive instance no software required.

I haven't seen the iPod Shuffle, but with a regular iPod you either
need iTunes or a third party hack to transfer the files over.

The iPod also works as a removeable drive but I think the files copied
over that way are separate from the playlist files. Jason has an iPod,
maybe he'll chime in.
