I had one in the house before. It did go off a few weeks ago, but I
changed the batteries and it stopped. Now I wonder if it wasn't the
batteries.
Anyway, I have them on every floor now.

I may have more bad news.
Water in my attic has caused spots on the 2nd floor ceiling. I spoke to
the insurance folk about that, under the assumption that they tell me to go
get a can of paint and a brush.
They recommended ripping out the ceiling, and replacing insulation, etc..
as needed. The fear is that mold is now growing in the space between the
attic floor and 2nd floor ceiling. I'm working on one problem at a time
and figured it would not be worth fixing the ceiling w/o first fixing the
leak. Based on my experience thus far, Insurance estimates rarely come
close to covering the job.

I put in a claim for some repairs to the downstairs bathroom floor
because the wood was rotting because of a leaky toilet. Insurance said it
would take ~$700. The lowest estimate I received was $1200 (although most
were >$3,000). The low-end contractor got the job. Although he said it
would only take 2 days he has been working on it for over a month (and has
already been back 5 times).

I think some day I'll look back and be thankful I've had these experiences.
