I was expecting them to recommend re-building the chimney from the attic up, but they didn't. The recommendation was to put a liner in the chimney, and put some kind of casing around it in the attic to help prevent further brick deterioration. The chimney is currently un-lined, which is against code now (I think), but was probably okay 115 years ago when the house was built.
The bulk of the quote they gave me was for the chimney liner ($2,300). The casing was ($700) and some brick repair at the top of the roof ($400) round out the quote. I'll see what the second (and third) opinions say when I speak to them at their respective appointments. My only complaint about the vendor from last night is that they started doing work (to clean out the chimney obstruction) without making me aware I was going to start incurring costs. ( Here is your estimate for the full job and you owe us $300 for the chimney cleaning we just gave you).
