Well - there is a reason they call them "ranches".  ;^)

At least in my neighborhood (the close Boston suburbs) you're lucky to get
10' between you and a neighbor.  Your front "yard" might be 6' deep and the
back yard perhaps 15-20' deep (just enough to place a small detached garage
at the end of the driveway and still allow access to the house).

In this area there are actually very few one-story buildings of any kind.
There are actually very few single family homes come to think of it - most
houses are triple deckers.
