In academics, there are two schools of thought on the issue of undergraduate
education. On the one hand, liberal arts schools believe in exactly what
Larry suggests - producing well-rounded people. The basic philosophy is that
you teach people how to learn, give them a broad overview of the world of
learning, and make them life-long students.

On the other hand, there is another philosophy that is more geared toward
educating a person for a particular career. This philosophy tends to be more
prevalent in technical schools, especially in countries like India and China
where competition is fierce and the payoff for success is so high. Ever see
the movie "Hoop Dreams" about kids in high school dreaming of making it in
the NBA one day? you could make a movie like that in India, only it would be
about high school kids dreaming of getting picked up by Infosys as software
engineers. So they don't necessarily pay much attention to the "well-rounded
person" philosophy.
