Have you ever tried to get an anullment? It is NOT the mere formality many people think it is. In fact, many divorced people have their anullment requests denied. Most of these people end up remarrying outside of the church.
I think your criticism of the "American" Catholics vs. "Roman" Catholics is a valid one if you make a very important distinction. The American Catholic CHURCH, is very much in line with the Roman CC. Where the divergence becomes more apparent is in the individual practitioners. Generally, I think American Catholics are much more likely to stray from the strict church teachings, especially as they apply to the controversial areas you mentioned: birth control, divorce, abortion, etc. > No, he was Catholic also.
