My best small venue was around 1983 or 1984 in New Haven, CT. We were carousing
around different bars, and ended up at Toad's Place (a dive that always had
some local or unheard-of band playing.) Picture early 80's punk rock bar. They
sold beer out of cans, and the cans often came with leaves stuck to them from
sitting out back iced down in garbage cans. I don't remember the name of the
band on the sign out front, but the guys playing on the stage were U2. We had
tickets to see them the next night at the Coliseum, so we saw them two nights
in a row (I think they played with Marshall Crenshaw Band and The Alarm during
the main show)

Now-a-days I get to see all the best 80s bands I want at the local casino. The
Mohegan Sun has a small club called the Wolf's Den. Absolutely FREE.

I saw the Go-Gos from 6 feet away, and MAN have they aged well.

Creedence used to play under the name Willie and the Poor Boys at small
clubs in order to stay sharp in between tours/gigs. Would be pretty cool to
be sitting at a bar in the 60's expecting some club band, when Fogerty comes
out and starts up some classic riff......
