Hi Erika,
You can do one of two things here:
1) Go with a streaming media content provider, which is expensive but
provides as much bandwidth as you'll ever need, for a price
Or
2) Compress these files down to a more normal bitrate using the Windows
Media Encoder (a free download at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmedia) and
host them either on the web server or using a media server. If you have
Windows 2000 Server or Windows Server 2003 then you're set either way, IF
the expected number of clients is not going to break your bandwidth usage
rates.
You have to figure out what kind of usage she is going to get on these
files. Let's say you compress these files down to 100Kb/sec (really not a
bad bitrate). If the lengths of these files are all 30 seconds, then the
total bitrate usage is going to be 100Kb/sec * 30 sec = 3 Mbits for every
full download. If you plan on hosting this for multiple people
simulataneously, you have to figure out what how many people might do it at
the same time. 30 simultaneous viewers are going to use 3 Mb/sec. Do you
ever expect that much usage? If so, can your network handle that? Could you
afford the cost of the bandwidth at that rate of usage?
If you go with a streaming media provider, $299/month is not bad.
If she does not compress the media, then the cost to her is going to be
insane if she has any real usage, anywhere it is hosted.

Subject: Streaming Media
OK. I need help here. Please :D
I have a client that has these huge windows media files (movies) that
she wants to host on her site.
Problem is they are huge. 15MB is the smallest, 350MB is the largest so
far. They are simply 10-30 second video clips.
So I'm suggesting a video streaming service.
Here's a recent quote:
---------------------
You receive what is called a Media Console and a CDN (Content Delivery
Network). Our CDN is basically thousands of streaming servers all
load-balanced and clustered throughout our multiple data centers.
This is what is inclusive in the Media Console: Service Includes The
Following Web Based Tools: Streaming Automation For Live & On-Demand
Delivery, Automated Link Generation, Automated FTP Upload, Intelligent
Template Players, User & Group Authentication, Pay-Per-View Engine,
Audience Registration, Event Scheduling, Pre and Post Stream Ad
Placement, DNS Management, Ability to Deliver Windows Media, Real
Networks & QuickTime Streaming Formats, Domain Link Protection, Domain
Reports, Media Package Reports, Filename Reports, Demographic
Information, Payment Gateway Support.
Our CDN (Content Delivery Network) has an A+ rating via StreamCheck is
of few companies to have such a rating.
I think the package that would best fit your needs would be either our
StreamPack 1500 or 2500 Package. This would include the following:
SP 1500
60GB of Monthly Transfer
300MB of Disk Space
On-Demand
$299.95 per Month
---------------------
Is this the norm?
I don't want her taken to the cleaners, and I haven't had time to
properly research this area yet.
I just want to make sure she's not paying for more than she needs... And
I'm a n00b when it comes to streaming media.
But we need some of it to showcase ONE section of her website.
Cheers,
Erika
