DC is great if you are convenient to the Metro's stops. I lived at 6th and F(?) Southwest, then 2nd and C Southeast, and I rode the Metro everyday to work and back. Never used my car because even late at night you can get a cab home for reasonably cheap if you live close to the center. However, when I lived at California and Connecticut Northwest (at the top of a big hill in between two stops) and at 10th and C Northeast, the Metro was too far to be useful everyday. I did use it periodically when I lived on California because otherwise I walked all the way down Connecticut to an office two blocks north of the White House, and that can be an uncomfortable hike in a wool suit in July.
The Boston T is a great system, as is the Boston bus system. I especially love the little Green line trains that go above ground and look like light rail cars. So retro! NYC subway pretty much rules as far as the US goes. Anyone ever take the Amtrak train between Boston and DC? There was a point where it was actually cheaper to fly the shuttle (Trump or United) than to take the train. I wish we had a better train system. In Europe, I love the Madrid subway. It goes everywhere and stays open late. In my more reckless younger days I would stay out all night partying with my friends and go home on the morning train just as the early birds were heading off to work around 6-7 am. I had an opportunity to ride the metro in Kiev in the early 90's. Nice system and very cheap at the time (I think it was like 1/10 of a penny to ride). I hear Moscow's system is awesome, though I've never seen it. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dana" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "CF-Community" <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, March 08, 2005 3:44 PM Subject: Re: Best US City Trains (Was: How Does BART Work?) > Oh well...
