I think you are right, here, for most directory-style or fixed-sized ads. They
will probably need to be tweaked a little.

I don't think he should try to automagically change the proportions or size of
an ad, but instead make the entry person handle this before submitting.

But if the bulk of the layout and design can be constrained, and the rules can
be codified as web-editor options, then the adjustments to make it perfect
should be a lot easier for the layout person than if all they get is a sketch
on a napkin.

Russell, if you want to see an industry that has gotten this down, look for
online business card printers who have web-based layout tools.

They know exactly the font, color and size variations they have available, and
have spent a ton of money over the last 5 years automating this part of their
business. For which my accountant and landlord are very thankful.

I'll be interested to hear if this actually works out. As a designer
who's had to reformat ads for different newspaper sizes and such, I
just can't see how automagically resizing ads is going to work well.
Unless you don't actually care if the ads look good. In the ones I
did, they always took a bit of finessing for each size since the
proportions and sometimes even orientation inevitably changed. Simple
stuff, sure but not polished ads. But I'm happy to be proven wrong.
