A lot of innocent people are being killed by suicide attacks that are
specifically targeting civilians, but some prominent Sunnis who have ties to
the insurgency have reported that many former regime members are looking for a
way out of the insurgency.

The insurgents were, in one Sunni leader's words, dealt a very demoralizing
blow by the sites of millions of Iraqis voting in free elections in January.
Now they want to way out of the fight, but they are afraid if they just give up
they will be imprisoned or killed.

Meanwhile, the Shiites and the Kurds have yet to form a government. They are
haggling over various posts and other issues. The Kurds are holding out for
every little bit of power they can get- such as mintaining the autonomy of the
Kurdish pesh merga militia in northern Iraq, and the sharing of oil revenues
from the Kirkuk region. All in all, it sounds like a bit of old-fashioned
political horse-trading is going on.

Iraq- certainly Baghdad and the Sunni triangle- is still a dangerous place, but
the insurgency is essentially done for. A lot more people will probably die
before the end of the bombing, but the democrats have already won. It's like a
chess match- the outcome has already been decided, but there are several more
moves until checkmate. The only real question left is whether the insurgents
concede defeat now or fight it out to the bitter end.
