I think it may seem over the top until you deal with a bastard of an animal.
I've generally never minded all of this until "Mr Kitty" moved in across the
street.

Mr Kitty would tear our vinyl car tops to shreds and piss on them, he would
leap and attach himself to screen windows (I presume to catch the insects
attracted to the light) startling the hell out of you and destroying the
screens.  He left cat shit in all sorts of interesting places and dead,
mangled things in others.

At least once that we're sure of and probably at least twice more Mr Kitty
went after one of the skunk kittens under our back shed causing mommy to
stink up our yard for a week.

In short the cat was a huge pain the ass - emotionally and financially.  The
owners claimed (rightfully so) that there are no leash laws for cats and
washed their hands of it.  They did, however get mad as hell when we hosed
Mr Kitty out of our yard.

I guess I'm just saying it's hard to judge a reaction if you live in an area
where all the animals are well behaved or under control.  ;^)
