What is a good way to diagnose a slow Windows box? This is a 2.5 year
old PC running Win2k Pro. 1 gig of ram. Drive is defragged. Over the
last two or three months I've been noticing a slow gradual decline in
performance. It seems to come and go and is graphical related. So for
example, clicking the "Minimize All" icon will result in a VERY slow
draw of the screen. Almost as if my background was too complex (it's
jump a nature picture, although it covers two screens).

My gut feeling is that it is video related. Although I also have
HORRIBLE slowdowns at times with Explorer. So for example, I click
View, and when I go to select Filmstrip, Explorer hangs for a good 30
seconds before it lets me pick an option. Ditto with "Send To". It's
like Explorer is just... I don't know - out of breath and over the
hill.

Would adding a gig of RAM help? Normally I wouldn't think twice - but
the RAM in question costs about 500 bucks for a gig.
