This is one of those times where I wonder if I have become an Ann Coulter pod person. I can't quite believe I am hearing myself say this, but "political correctness" when said without sarcasm is a left-wing term, sorry. And again, the conservative I have met do not fit your suburban mold. I am thinking of traditional Navahos, ranchers in the Texas Hill Country, people in Northern Michigan and small-town Ohio. I just can't quite fit them into your vision of this.
Nor is it as simple as an urban/rural dichotomy. Hispanics in Albuquerque went significantly Republican in the last election. You may not consider this a big city, but it's the biggest one for several hundred miles in any direction...Besides, I suspect (though I don't actually know) that the story is similar in San Antonio, Phoenix and Los Angeles. Anglos were also pretty inclined to go Republican. This is a military town and a weapons development center. I suspect that a lot of those people voted their paycheck, while the Hispanics were just tired of being taken for granted and, a lot of them, sincerely upset about abortion and gay marriage.
