To answer in one swoop... I probably have residential DSL. I'm using SBC, and I wish they gave a warning before about this. Some google searching finds a lot of people who had the same problem earlier this year.
I probably am using Authentication over smtp (since previously, I can't send mail until I check it) but I don't see an obvious setting along those lines in Eudora.
