Of course there's always tubal-ligation ... which shouldn't have been
out of the question, since it would have been her getting the
operation and not the (obviously neurotic) partner. Or for that matter
IUD and diaphram either of which would likely be easier and less
expensive... but then people don't always make rational decisions. I
don't think this particular scenario is common -- I know it happens --
but I've only known one woman personally, so given my wholly
unscientific survey, I'd say it's pretty uncommon.
