I don't think you can reasonably make the assessment that religious
organizations have had the best track record for providing charity
dating back 2K years... You _can_ make the claim that they have been
doing it for as long, but there's a lack of data to say that they have
been the best at it for 2000 years. What I was talking about re:
charity as we know it today is that I'm not even sure how you would
(or could) even compare the role/influence/effectiveness of today's
charities against those of generations prior to the 1800's. So many
things have changed so dramatically in the last 2000 yrs -- starting
with the industrial revolution, but that's just a drop in the bucket.
Hell, even the printing press if you're going back that far.

I'm saying stop making yourself feel better by providing a pittance
that gives the outward appearance of helping them while allowing most
of the aid to get bound up and lost in institutions. Give _directly_
to people who need it. But nobody wants to hear that message. Our
culture has taught everyone that giving directly to people who need it
is "enabling" them to be "sponges" or "leeches" -- that being
genuinely, intimately charitable will only lead to your own suffering.
It's even part of or memetic culture now -- "garbage in garbage out",
etc. I hear that phrase a lot more often than I hear people mention
"the good Samaritan" -- and when you do hear people mention the good
Samaritan they don't seem to understand it. They put on a show for
everyone else and then they walk away with their sweaty little palms
clutched tightly around their wallets as they pass by an indigent on
the street to hop into their brand new Mustang and drive home to their
suburban condo where they can feel good about themselves by ("safely")
writing out a $20 check to the United Way (assuming the sound of XM
radio hasn't drummed it out of their heads by the time they get home).
Truth is just about every time Tiff and I have opened our home to
someone in a bad situation, it's just been hard on us and ended badly,
and in general we've felt used.
We continue to have hope.
