Interesting that this thread came up today. I was driving to Wal-Mart to get some BBQ chicken chunks (mmmm) for lunch. I was stopped at an intersection and across the street was a homeless guy with a cardboard sign stating that "anything helps".
A few years ago while visiting the area for business, I was walking down the beach at Laguna Beach and a guy was begging on the sidewalk. I gave him some loose change I had and the guy I was with, who lived there for a few years, said I shouldn't have given him the money because that would give him incentive to keep begging. I thought it was a bit rude for him to say that because, first I had the change and didn't need it (the company would pay me back one way or another) and if I were in that position, I would hope someone would give me something. Maybe I associated with this guy because money is tight for us right now and I can totally understand not having money for bills or anything we may want at the time. (Damn GW Bush!) That brings me back to the guy on the street today. If I would have had some change or loose cash, I probably would have given it to him. I sometimes feel guilty that I drive an 86 Corvette convertible while these people are on the corners with only a trash bag for their clothes. Then, on the other hand people in Lexuses (Lexii) probably don't feel guilty that they are driving those $$$ cars and I'm in a 19-year-old Chevy. What are you opinions? Should we give to the street needy or are we only contributing to the problem? When I worked down there and lived up at Connecticut and California St., I would walk down Connecticut to work, and I would see the same guys in the same spots begging for change every single day. I still think the gag would be video-worthy. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~| This list and all House of Fusion resources hosted by CFHosting.com.
