I think everyone here can agree that abusing any substance -- heroin,
alcohol, diswashing detergent -- is harmful. No argument there.

I can't speak to "the vast majority of cases" but I was this close
(holds up fingers a centimeter apart) to scoring some for my mom when
she was in chemo. The anti-nausea drugs didnt' work very well, and had
a number of nasty side-effects. Several studies have suggested that pot
works better (in some studies, marginally, in some, much better) than
more traditional treatments and has fewer side effects.

Quite frankly, the only reason I didn't is that Mom was too worried
about me getting busted.

My grandmother had glaucoma, but surgery was completely successful, so
we don't really need to go there. Besides, it's kinda cliche. :-)

Hmm. I guess it's pretty obvious which side of the fence I land on, eh?
