These are not US citizens. They have no rights under the constitution. They are not even meeting the basic requirements of the rules of land warfare.
Also you say we have a stake in rebuilding, while I don't see what that has to do with the current topic, I can say we have done more for the people of Afghanistan in the last three years than their own governments (there have been several in just the last thirty years) have accomplished in ten times that amount of time. Boys and Girls go to school. Their is electricity, internet access is spreading. Cell phones are everywhere. New businesses spring up all over the place. Are we doing the Marshall plan all over again? No, but did 18 million citizens sign up to fight/ Did we change over into a full war time economy? No. We would be unable to do in Afghanistan what we did in Europe. The cost alone would be prohibitive, we could never get away with 'reeducation camps' like we did in Europe, and if we moved in as a force of occupation, rather than one of support, the locals would surely revolt. Finally the war (never declared so not really a war) isn't over. It's still going on everyday.
