My landlord (who lives in the apartment below us) asked me down to look at his air conditioner. He had it in the window and when he turned it on it was making a rapid, loud clicking noise (the fan was obviously hitting something).
Well... we progressively dug in deeper and deeper looking for the problem. I ended up taking the entire unit out of its casing and removing the fan. The problem it turned out, was that a small plastic bracket designed to hold the fan shroud had broken. I was able to cut down another brace such that the shroud was held more firmly place and the problem was eliminated. Took maybe two hours tops. Two things about this: 1) During the process my landlord (a really great guy who unfortunately speaks little English) said things to effect of "ah well, I guess I'll have to got get another one". In the end it was a little crappy piece of plastic - many people would have simply thrown this item away. It just makes me wish I had a garage to grab up all this stuff I see tossed to the curb. 2) I had a rather common epiphany: It's REALLY nice to have a problem before you where you know the exact boundaries of it. The problem was in this 24"x18"x28" box - there was no place else it could be. Working on code all day (especially for a huge company) no problem is ever "right there". There's always a chance it's in the browser... or the CF code... or the database... or the replication server... or the mainframe... or the source system. It was just a really subtle, but incredibly nice feeling to be sitting in front of a closed field of play.
