My sympathies. It was a bugger of a shock to me when I was diagnosed. 

Seriously though,  once things are somewhat stabilized look into
getting an insulin pump. It makes things so much easier and keeps your
blood glucose levels stable much easier than having to take several
needles daily.

Medtronic now has a blood glucose meter that talks with the insulin
pump to automatically adjust the basil insulin rate and bolus as
needed depending on glucose levels. So it makes it much easier to keep
things stable.

Also get a carb counting book - not an Atkins book but something like
the Calorie King book (see http://www.calorieking.com/foods/). and
follow it very closely. You calculate the number of grams of carbs per
meal and then divide by 10 - this gives you the amount of insulin you
need as a bolus. The other calculations involve being over or under
the normal glucose ranges. It can be done, it may be a pain, but
consider the alternatives.
