Would it make you feel any better if it were super-space-adhesive distributed via a flexible polymer strip? Just so you know - Duct Tape has been a standard and demanded tool on EVERY US manned mission. It's considered indispensable (and its versatility is at least partly responsible for saving the Apollo 13 astronauts). (Also, if the story is accurate, it's probably not the window for the space shuttle - a window falling from the craft would have destroyed the ship. It was probably from the launch structure.) But perhaps we should ask why NASA's goals have been more than doubled by the administration but their budget has only increased 7% over the past two years? They've been charged with revitalizing the aging shuttle program, getting a successor up and completing the CEV (a vehicle designed to take us to the moon again) that the Bush administration ordered, and the continued building of the international space station with flagging (at best) international support. The simple fact that NASA has to consider dropping support for the $4m/year Voyager program (the only human constructs to EVER leave the solar system) to make ends meet is a signal.
