I think because a majority of people:
Are worried by corporate corruption (enron, global crossing, etc)
Are worried by financial corruption (traders indicted, financial
services companies indicted)
Are worried about making the wrong decision, and being left with nothing.
Are worried about having to take on one more burden (figuring this stuff out)
Are worried that their neighbors are even more likely to make bad
decisions, becoming a future source of worry/need.
Are worried that the rich and powerful are somehow going to make out
even better.
Are worried that the poor will suffer more than ever.
Don't trust the governement to EVER do anything that actually, really
benefits the people.
