Well... they weren't so bad back then... Top speed on a Model-A ford was about 45mph and they didn't have much mass (there's a reason they called it a "horseless carriage") ... still not great without a seatbelt, but it's a bit of a different story when somebody in a Lincoln land-whale runs a stop-sign at 50mph. It's the same sort of story when the other driver's in a Harley with a side-car. There just happened to be more people involved in this one, plus the incidental value of the car.
