missed ben's comment. Fair enough, but I was thinking by analogy. For thyroid, which is another endocrine gland, you are either one or the other. The known genetic syndromes involving the thyroid don't seem to apply to us, but the fact is that there are people at each generation of my mother's family with some sort of thyroid disorder, for four generations back. They may not have an explanation but that's pretty clearly not random.
