I think you might have misread those articles.
The economy is actual doing pretty good right now especially when
compared to other major economies. And we are still competitive. What
those articles might have said was IN THE FUTURE the US MAY loose it's
competitiveness and that will hurt the economy. A large part of the
claim is many other countries are banging out more engineers than we
are.

So how do we force students to change their major?
