Nobodies being deprived of anything except the use of a word, everything else is equal or should be.
But everything else is not equal. Access denied to partners by hospitals, because they aren't "family." Access denied to insurance benefits, because they are not "married." Access denied to inheritance because they are not equal to other family. Now I guess it could be argued that the gay community could just accept the "civil union" and start fighting all these other entities to get the civil union to be equal to a marriage, but that is a very long and arduous fight. The blacks of this country couldn't seem to win that fight, so it was decided that separate does not equal equality, so it had to be overturned.
