Equality is not about titles unless using the title deprives you of something. If civil union license affords the same opportunity as a marriage license where is the deprivation? Why not ban the words men and women from restroom signs? That's segregation?
Ok lets be equal. Let us not call any of them marriages. Everybody gets a "Civil Union?" This has been shot down by opponents to gay marriage. Why, it not a marriage anymore? In my mind the sensible, solution is that the government document that confers the civil rights of a joining of two people is a "Civil Union" license. And that should be all that is required in the eyes of the state. No ceremony necessary. Then a "Marriage" is the ceremony that the couple (group) can have with the affiliation of their choice. This confers no state recognized rights, but anybody can have them. So a couple (group) can either get a Civil Union License, have a Marriage ceremony or both as they see fit. But for some reason a sensible compromise like this is not acceptable to many, usually conservative/christen, people.
