I'm jumping into this thread late..

A guitar processor can take many forms. The most common (and probably
cost effective) is the stompbox (AKA the box that is between the guitar and
amp). Stompboxes usually have one effect, some of the common ones being
distortion, chorus, and the wah pedal. There are "octave" stomp boxes
which will make the guitar sound like a bass.

There are also rack-mount processors, which usually have a bunch of
effects all rolled into one unit. These are more expensive than a single
stompbox, and you'll usually want to get a foot-pedal for any real use.

Despite what Brian said about lessons and giving up, I am completely
self-taught [on guitar]. But, I did have tons of music lessons on
different instruments, both before and after. My first year of college I
played for around 4 hours a day, and that was how I learned. I bet lessons
would have brought me a lot farther quicker.

For reference, my "Live rig" consisted of this:

I love Takamine guitars. This is the one used live by Bruce Springstein
/ Garth Brooks. I did not know that when I bought it. Takamine also have
a lot of lower cost guitars in the G-Series. I modified mine by adding a
microphone in the body. Then I split the signal... each one goes into a...

This is the GP-100. I paid ~$800 for my first one many years ago. At
the time there was nothing like it. It was the first unit w/ Roland's amp
modeling technology. Its ancient now, but the unit can still be found on
eBay for $200 or under. Last time I researched it, the Line 6 Pod was the
technology of choice for this stuff.

I use a FC-200 foot controller, which was designed for the unit. If I
had to replace it, I'd get this one:

Hopefully this will be of some use. ;)
