Gruss said "Therefore his point is that if one looks to the Bible for an
answer to abortion, the Bible defines life as beginning at birth."

The passage I mentioned establishes the idea that a fetus is a God-given
life.

But you should actually read the passage yourself to determine what it says:

'If men who are fighting hit a pregnant woman and she gives birth
prematurely but there is no serious injury, the offender must be fined
whatever the woman's husband demands and the court allows. But if there is
serious injury, you are to take life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth,
hand for hand, burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise.' (NIV).

This is an ambiguous passage - the "serious injury" inflicted could mean
either the baby or the mother being injured, it is not clear what is meant.

If it refers to the child being injured, the consequences are very severe.

To take it as the meaning that the mother was injured still does not mean
that abortion is a rightful act - it does not even discuss this aspect of
the situation.

How does that apply at all to what the Rabbi said?
